Emergency locksmith in Elda, answering whatever the hour

The door clicked shut with the keys on the kitchen table, the key snapped in the street door, the bag with the keys in it has gone. Whatever the time, the phone is answered, and you get a straight answer about when someone can reach your street.

At dusk, a locksmith carrying a toolbox walks up to a lit doorway where a woman is waiting, a van parked behind him and town lights on the hill

The first minute

Four details that bring us to the right door

Elda and Petrer have grown into one built-up area of almost 87,000 people, and from the street it is not always obvious which town you are standing in. The quicker these four things are clear, the quicker someone is on the way.

  • The town: Elda or Petrer, or one of the towns further out. If you are not sure, say so and give the nearest landmark. The guide on streets that change town explains why it matters.
  • The street and number, and the name of the estate if it has one.
  • The block, staircase and floor, and whether the street door of the building is locked as well as your own.
  • What the lock is doing: shut with the key inside, key broken off, key turning without moving the bolt. A WhatsApp photo and location pin say it fastest.

If anyone inside is at risk, a child, someone unwell, a pan on the hob, ring 112 before you ring us.

What it usually is

The problems behind most calls to this number

  • The door pulled shut behind you

Out to the bins or down to the car with the keys still inside. If the bolt was not turned, this is usually the gentlest opening there is.

  • Keys lost or taken

On a night out, on the train back to Elda-Petrer station or with a stolen bag. If anything with your address went too, the cylinder should change the same night.

  • Half a key left in the lock

The stub can usually be drawn out with an extractor. Picking at it with tweezers tends to push it further in, so leave it alone until we arrive.

  • The key turns, the bolt does not

Something inside the lock has broken. The door is opened first, and the lock repaired or replaced after.

  • The street door of the building

A portal lock that has seized or a key that snapped in it, leaving a whole staircase locked out or locked in.

  • Keys locked in the car

That is a car lockout, also answered at any hour, and limited to opening the door.

Timing

Why there is no arrival time printed here

The area covered runs from the estates of San Francisco de Sales to the country lanes around Pinoso, and from Petrer to Monforte del Cid. In the old town, the narrow streets around the castle are being rebuilt and the van may have to stop a street away. For five days around the first weekend of June, Moros y Cristianos closes streets in the centre for the parades.

So how long it takes depends on where you are, the hour and where the last job was. The estimate is worked out on the call, for your street, at that moment. Answering at three in the morning is something this business can promise; a number of minutes on a website would be a guess. If you are caught out during the fiestas, read how help reaches a closed street.

The job

What happens once you have rung

  1. An estimate for your address

Given on the call, so you can decide whether to wait or make other plans.

  2. Proof that it is your home

Before anything is touched: an ID or residence card with the address, a rental contract, a neighbour or the building’s president who knows you, or the owner on the phone.

  3. The price, agreed at the door

Once the lock has been looked at, and before any work starts.

  4. Through the lock before anything else

Drilling is the last resort, and you are asked before it happens.

  5. Locked properly before we leave

If the cylinder had to be drilled, or your keys are now in a stranger’s pocket, a new one goes in there and then.

How each type of door is opened is explained in opening a door without damage, and what comes afterwards in a new cylinder for the door. The quarters and towns covered are on the coverage page, and every way to reach us is on the contact page.

Questions

Questions people ask from the landing

The street door of the block is shut as well as my flat door. Should I mention it?

Yes, straight away. In a block of flats the portal and the flat door have separate locks, and knowing that both are between you and your sofa means the right tools come for both on the same trip.

Everything is inside, phone included. How do I get hold of you?

Ask to borrow a phone: a neighbour, a bar on the corner, the shop downstairs. Tell us which number you are ringing from, so we can call you back on it when we are close.

A child or someone unwell is inside on their own. Do I ring you?

Ring 112 first. The emergency services are sent for exactly this and will reach the door faster than any locksmith. Once everyone is safe, call us to get the door locking properly again.

It is the Moros y Cristianos weekend and the parade is blocking my street. Can you still get to me?

Usually, yes, but not always to the door itself. Tell us the nearest street that is open, and we meet you there and walk the last part. The guide on festival weekends explains how to make it quicker.

I live in Petrer, not Elda. Is it the same number at night?

The same number, at any hour. Petrer is covered the same as Elda, from the old town under the castle to the urbanisations on the hillsides.

Still outside?

Ring now. If you cannot talk, WhatsApp the street, the floor and what the lock is doing, and we will call you back.
