When that person retires, falls ill or dies, the code can go with them. This is how to get it open properly, and how to stop it happening again. 2 October 2026 · 4 min read Elda has around 4,000 businesses. In any firm that has been going for a generation, there may well be a safe in the office that one person has opened for years: the founder, a partner, the long-serving bookkeeper. Nobody else ever needed the code, until the day that person is no longer there to give it. It happens with retirements, with illness, with deaths, and sometimes simply with a falling-out. The safe still holds what it always held: deeds, cash, contracts, the company seal, things that matter. ## First, look for what may already exist Before anyone opens anything, it is worth a search. - **The manufacturer’s paperwork.** Some safes came with an emergency key or an override code, kept somewhere other than the safe. - **The founder’s papers or family.** A code written down at home, a key in a drawer nobody has emptied. - **The firm’s adviser or notary.** Sometimes a sealed envelope was left exactly for this. If any of that turns up, the safe may open in a minute and the only job is changing the code. ## Who is entitled to ask for it to be opened A safe is never opened on someone’s word, because what is inside belongs to someone specific. For a business, that means a signed authorisation from whoever now runs it, with the documents that show it: the company’s deeds, a power of attorney, the papers appointing the new manager. If the founder has died and the contents may be part of an estate, the heirs or the executor need to agree, and it is wise to have a witness present when it is opened. Sort this out before the locksmith arrives. It is the part that usually takes longest. ## How it is opened A photo of the front of the safe, with any make and model plate, tells us most of what we need. Many safes can be opened without damage. Where a hole has to be drilled, it is placed so that a new lock can be fitted and the safe stays in use, and only after you have agreed. ## Then make sure it never happens again - **Set a new code**, known to at least two people. - **Write it down** and keep it somewhere secure and separate: with the firm’s adviser, or in a sealed envelope with the company papers. - **Review it** whenever someone with the code leaves.
